Instructions

Create an Olympic discovery centre by displaying photographs of Olympic ceremonies, athletes from diverse countries, the Olympic rings, and a world map. Arrange flag-making materials at tables and prepare a simple flag template for each child.

Gather children near the display and begin with genuine curiosity: 'Have you ever heard of the Olympics? What do you think happens there?' Listen to and validate all responses, building from children's existing knowledge. Share the core concept with age-appropriate language: 'The Olympics is a very special time when people from countries all around the world come together. They play sports, they make friends, and they celebrate being together!'

Focus attention on the Olympic rings image. Count the rings together (five!), name each colour (blue, yellow, black, green, red), and explain their meaning: 'Each ring represents a big part of our world where people live. The rings are linked together, holding hands, to show that people everywhere can be friends through sports.'

Make the symbolism tangible by having children stand and interlock arms with classmates: 'Let's be like the Olympic rings—connected together!' Feel how the connection creates strength and unity. Discuss how it feels to be linked together.

Transition to the flag-making activity by distributing templates and colouring materials. Model tracing or colouring the rings while reviewing colours and counting. Encourage careful work while circulating and discussing: 'Which ring are you colouring now? What colour is that?'

Once flags are complete and dried, attach them to straws and conduct an Olympic procession. March around the classroom or playground waving flags, perhaps playing music from different countries. Children can chant 'Olympics! Olympics! Friends from everywhere!'

Culminate by returning to the world map, helping children locate where the Olympics have been held (or will be held), reinforcing the global nature of this celebration.

Educator tip

Emphasize friendship and unity themes: 'The rings hold hands just like friends! Countries hold hands through sports!' This builds social-emotional understanding alongside factual knowledge.

Assessment

Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Observe student's ability to follow directions, participate in discussions, and use listening skills.
