Learning Objectives

Children will be able to identify and collect at least three different types of leaves.

Children will be able to sort leaves into at least two categories (e.g., by colour, size, or shape).

Children will be able to use descriptive words to talk about the leaves they observe and handle.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Begin by reading a book about leaves or families and nature, sparking curiosity about the outdoor world, just like exploring their own homes.

2. Take children on a short, safe walk around the schoolyard or a nearby park. Encourage them to observe the leaves on trees and on the ground.

3. Provide each child with a collection bag and invite them to gently collect interesting leaves they find, thinking about leaves that might be like those near their own homes.

4. Back in the classroom, gather children around the large sorting mat. Ask them to empty their collections.

5. Guide the children in sorting the leaves. Ask questions like, "Can you find all the red leaves?" or "Let's put all the big leaves here." Compare their sorting to how they might sort toys or clothes at home.

6. Give each child a paper plate and a few leaves. Encourage them to use their magnifying glasses to look closely.

7. Ask children to describe the leaves using their senses: "What does this leaf feel like? Is it smooth or bumpy? What colour is it? Does it have any patterns, like a picture at home?"

8. You can use the picture cards to introduce more leaf names or to extend the activity by having children match leaves.

Educator Tip

Ensure the outdoor area is safe and free of hazards. Supervise closely, especially when using magnifying glasses. Encourage children to share their discoveries, fostering a sense of community similar to family sharing. For children who are hesitant, offer to collect leaves with them or provide artificial leaves.

Assessment

Observe children's engagement during the nature walk and their ability to identify and collect different leaves. Note their participation in the sorting activity and listen for their use of descriptive language when talking about the leaves. You can also photograph their sorted collections to document their progress.

Educator tip

Pre-cut pieces; model descriptive language; include diverse family structures.

Assessment

Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Teacher checklist: engagement, sorting accuracy.
