1,2,3 GO!: One-to-One Counting Cards + Quantity Language

Level 2 strengthens comprehension + application.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

Materials

- 10 laminated cards, each with a different number of simple family member outlines (e.g., 1 parent, 2 parents, 3 children, etc.)

- Corresponding number cards (1-10)

- Small manipulative objects (e.g., buttons, small blocks, dried beans)

- A soft mat or designated counting area

- A large basket for collecting manipulatives

Learning Objectives

- Children will be able to count out the correct quantity of objects to match a numeral on a card.

- Children will be able to verbally identify the number of family members shown on each card.

- Children will be able to use one-to-one correspondence when counting objects.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather the children around the mat. "Welcome everyone! Today we are going to play a counting game with our families. Let's see how many people might live in different families!"

2. Show the children the laminated cards with family member outlines one by one. "Look at this card. How many people do you see in this family? Let's count together: 1, 2, 3."

3. Once the children have identified the number of family members on a card, introduce the corresponding numeral card. "You counted 3 people. Which number card shows the number 3?"

4. Have a child select the correct numeral card and place it next to the matching picture card.

5. Introduce the manipulative objects. "Now, we're going to use these little helpers to count out the same number of objects as there are people in our families on the card. Can you count out 3 buttons for this family?"

6. Encourage children to touch each object as they count, saying the number aloud. Support those who need help to ensure one-to-one correspondence.

7. Once they have counted the correct quantity, have them place the objects near the number card.

8. Repeat the process with different family cards, allowing each child a turn to select a card and count out the objects.

Educator Tip

To ensure all children can participate, offer a range of supports. For those needing more challenge, ask them to represent a slightly larger number or compare two cards and say which family has more members. For those needing more support, point to each object as they count or start with cards showing fewer items. Ensure the counting area is safe and clear of any small objects that could be choking hazards if played with outside the activity.

Assessment

Observe children’s ability to accurately count the objects and match them to the numeral card. Note their verbal participation in identifying numbers and their engagement with the concept of counting family members. Look for demonstrations of one-to-one correspondence as they count.

Educator tip

Require complete thoughts; rotate roles; photograph work.

Assessment

Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Anecdotal notes + product check.
