Learning Objectives
Children will be able to identify and name at least three family members.
Children will be able to verbally identify the beginning sound of their own name and the names of some family members.
Children will be able to create a collage representing their family using provided materials.
Children will demonstrate turn-taking and cooperation while sharing materials.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather the children and sit in a circle. Begin by asking, "Who lives in your house?" Allow children to share, encouraging them to name their family members. Write down some of these family roles (Mum, Dad, Grandma, sibling, pet) on the chart paper.
2. Introduce the concept of beginning sounds. Say your name clearly, emphasizing the first sound (e.g., "My name is M-Miss Carol"). Ask children to say their names and listen for the first sound.
3. Show the photographs of the children's family members. Help each child identify their family members in the photos and say their names. Point out the beginning sound of each name and connect it to the written word if appropriate.
4. Explain that they will be making a special collage to show their families. Lay out the sugar paper, glue sticks, scissors, and magazines.
5. Instruct children to choose a piece of sugar paper for their collage. They can then select magazine pictures that represent their home or family (e.g., houses, pets, people who look like family members).
6. Guide the children to glue their family photographs onto their chosen sugar paper. Help them write or decorate around the names of the family members.
7. Encourage children to talk about their collage, pointing out their family members and saying their names. As they work, ask them about the beginning sounds of their family members' names.
8. Once finished, display the collages in the classroom or invite parents to see them.
Educator Tip
For children who speak a different home language, encourage them to share family member names in their home language as well as English, and celebrate both. Ensure scissors are age appropriate and supervise closely during their use. Invite families to contribute an additional photo or a drawing of their family for the collage to further involve them in the learning process.
Assessment
Observe children during the activity. Note their ability to name family members, their engagement in discussions about beginning sounds, and their recall of the first sound of their own name. Collect the completed collages as evidence of their creative expression and understanding of family members.
Educator tip
Require complete thoughts; photograph work for portfolios.
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Anecdotal notes + product check.
