Instructions
Hide numeral tiles (1-5 initially) in the sand. Children excavate them like archaeologists and identify what they've found: 'You found... a 3! That's the number 3! Three!' Connect to the amount: 'The 3 means three things together!'
Once all numerals are found, invite children to put them in order: 'Can we line them up? Which comes first? Then which? 1... 2... 3... 4... 5!' The physical ordering builds the mental number line.
Match collections to numerals: 'You found the 3. Can you count out 3 shells to put next to it? Touch each one — 1, 2, 3. Three shells for the number 3!' This connects symbol to quantity.
Introduce numeral formation in sand. A child traces over a sand numeral card, then tries to write the numeral themselves in the sand: 'Feel the shape of the 2. Now can you write it in the sand?' Sand allows easy erasure and retry.
Play 'show me': 'Show me 4 fingers! Now find the number 4 in the sand! Now count out 4 shells!' The tripling of representation (gesture, symbol, object) deepens number understanding.
Extend to 'one more than': 'You've got the 3. What comes after 3? What's one more than 3? 4! Can you find the 4?' This prepares children for addition.
