Instructions
Teach formation one numeral at a time. Begin with numerals that share formation patterns: 0 and 6 and 9 all use a circular movement. Group teaching by formation family rather than numerical order.
Use rhymes for each numeral: '0 — round and round, never stopping, that's the way to make a 0.' '1 — a tall straight line, slide down and stop, that's the way to make a 1.' Rhymes provide a retrievable formation cue.
Sky-write each numeral before any pencil/paper work: 'Everyone put your pointing finger up! Follow me in the air — big 3: down, curve round, curve round!' Large motor movements first, fine motor later.
Trace in sand: children use their finger to form the numeral in a sand tray, supported by a visual guide card. 'Start at the top — slide down... curve round... curve round again. 3!'
Form with playdough: roll a sausage and shape it into the numeral. 'Look at your playdough 2! Does it look like the number 2? Adjust the curve...' This builds spatial understanding of numeral shape.
Final stage: pencil on paper, always starting at the correct entry point. 'Where does the 4 start? At the top left — reach across, come down, then a tall line through. 4!'
