Instructions
Compare quantities before comparing numerals. Children need to understand that five things is 'more' than three things before the symbols 5 and 3 become meaningful. Use physical objects and ask 'Which group has more?'
Introduce vocabulary systematically: more, fewer (not less—we use 'fewer' for countable items), the same, equal, greater, smaller. 'This group has more. This group has fewer. These two are the same—they're equal.'
Use the language 'greater than' and 'less than' rather than 'bigger' and 'smaller' when discussing numbers. A bigger number isn't physically larger—it represents a greater quantity. Precise language matters.
Line up quantities next to each other to compare: 'Let's line up the cubes. One, two, three here. One, two, three, four, five here. Which line is longer? So five is greater than three.' Visual comparison supports understanding.
Order numbers using a number line or track. 'Where does seven go? It comes after six and before eight.' Physical placement of numeral cards helps children internalise the sequence.
Play comparison games: 'Let's play War—we each turn over a card. Whose number is greater? That person wins both cards!' Games provide purposeful, engaging practice.
Introduce the comparison symbols when children are ready: and <. 'The open end faces the bigger number—the crocodile wants to eat the bigger number!' Use this mnemonic but ensure understanding underlies the trick.
Connect to real life: 'There are more girls than boys today. There are fewer apples than children. We need more!' Make comparison practical and purposeful wherever possible.
