Introduce rainbow writing: 'You're going to write a letter seven times — one for each colour of the rainbow! Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.' This repetition builds muscle memory without being a drill.

Before any writing, practise the letter in the air with big arm movements: 'This letter is a 'd'. Watch — tall stick down, curve back to the middle, curve round, bump back up. Let's do it big in the air together!'

Provide a pale grey starter letter (very lightly pencilled or printed) for children to trace over in red first. 'Start at the top, come down — yes! Curve round — lovely. Now in orange, straight over the red.'

Maintain correct formation above speed. 'Go slowly — I'd rather you make it perfectly slowly than quickly messily. Your hands need to learn the right way.' Praise precise formation specifically.

Add a tactile element: run their finger along a textured letter tile before writing. 'Feel the bumps as you trace it. Now your hand knows how it goes.' This proprioceptive element supports formation memory.

Extend to writing the letter in context: 'You've practised 'd' beautifully. Now let's write a word that starts with 'd' — 'dog'! D-O-G.' Contextualising letters in words shows their purpose.
