Level 2 strengthens application and explanation. 'Let's Sing Along (Hygiene Songs)' deepens understanding of health responsibility.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- A portable music player or speaker.

- Printed lyric sheets with simple picture cues for non-readers.

- A hand-washing station or a basin with soap and paper towels.

- Small hand mirrors for each child.

- A set of laminated hygiene-themed flashcards.

Learning Objectives

- Demonstrate correct hand-washing sequences through rhythmic movement.

- Recall and recite lyrics that explain the importance of personal hygiene.

- Coordinate physical gestures with musical tempo.

- Identify at least three healthy habits through song and visual aids.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather the children in a circle and introduce the concept of hygiene as a way to keep our bodies strong and germ-free.

2. Play a familiar melody set to new lyrics about washing hands, brushing teeth, and covering coughs.

3. Model the specific movements for each verse, such as scrubbing the backs of hands or rubbing fingers together.

4. Distribute the hand mirrors and ask children to look at their teeth while singing a song about brushing.

5. Practise the hand-washing song while standing at the classroom sink to ensure children associate the music with the real-life task.

6. Use the flashcards to prompt which healthy habit song comes next, encouraging children to choose the order.

7. Increase the tempo of the songs gradually to challenge the children to keep their movements precise and rhythmic.

8. Conclude the session by having the children perform their favourite hygiene song as a group without the teacher leading.

Educator Tip

To differentiate for children who struggle with sequencing, pair them with a peer mentor who can model the movements. If the group is highly energetic, incorporate a freeze-dance element where the music stops and children must pose like they are performing a hygiene task.

Assessment

- Observe if the child can independently perform the correct hand-washing motions while singing.

- Note the child's ability to recall the sequence of verses without verbal prompts.

- Evaluate the child's participation in group discussions regarding why these habits keep them healthy.

Educator tip

Require complete thoughts (sentence frames); rotate roles in pairs; photograph work for portfolios.

Assessment

Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observe reasoning, independence, collaboration.
