- Scenario cards
- Truth/lie sorting activity
Instructions
Read a book about honesty, pausing to predict and discuss: 'Do you think the character will tell the truth? What might happen if they lie? What might happen if they're honest?'
After reading, explore the concept: 'What is honesty? Honesty means telling the truth, even when it's hard. Honest people can be trusted because we know they'll tell us what's really true.'
Play a truth/lie sorting game with simple scenarios: 'You broke a glass. You say you didn't do it. Is that honest or not honest?' Include nuanced scenarios appropriate for the age: 'Your friend asks if you like their drawing and you don't. What's the kind AND honest thing to do?'
Discuss why honesty matters: 'When people lie, it's hard to trust them. When people tell the truth, we know we can believe what they say. Trust is really important for friendships!'
Role-play situations where telling the truth is hard: you did something wrong, you don't want to hurt feelings, you're scared of getting in trouble. Practice honest responses: 'It's hard to say, but I was the one who knocked over the blocks.'
Create an 'Honest Heart' pledge that children can sign, committing to tell the truth even when it's hard.
Educator tip
Acknowledge that honesty is sometimes hard—especially when you're scared of consequences. Create a classroom culture where truth-telling is valued over perfection: 'I'm so glad you told me the truth. That was brave.'
Assessment
Evaluate understanding of honesty concept, ability to identify honest vs. dishonest choices, and personal applications of honesty.
