Instructions
Discuss why apologies matter: 'When we hurt someone—on purpose or by accident—it damages our relationship. A good apology starts to repair the damage.'
Teach the components of a meaningful apology:
1. Say what you did: 'I'm sorry I grabbed the toy from you.'
2. Acknowledge the impact: 'That probably made you feel upset and disrespected.'
3. Say how you'll do better: 'Next time I'll ask before I take something.'
4. Offer repair: 'Would you like to play with it first?'
Practice with scenarios: role-play giving full apologies instead of quick 'sorry's. Compare: which felt more meaningful?
Discuss repair actions—what can you DO to make things better? Return what was taken, fix what was broken, comfort who was hurt, include who was excluded.
Teach graceful apology acceptance: 'Thank you for apologizing. I forgive you.' Discuss that forgiveness doesn't mean forgetting or that what happened was okay—it means choosing to move forward.
Practice real apologies when conflicts occur: 'Would you like to use our apology framework?'
Educator tip
Don't force apologies—insincere apologies teach that apologies are meaningless rituals. Instead: 'When you're ready to make things right, I can help you think about what to say.'
Assessment
Observe quality of apologies given, inclusion of repair actions, and graceful acceptance of apologies from others.
