Montessori Life

Preschool in Umhlanga, South Africa

Montessori Life is an established pre-school in the Village of Sunningdale, Umhlanga, South Africa, serving children from 18 months to 6 years. The school is run in accordance with the internationally renowned Montessori philosophy and teaching principles. Its stated focus is to provide a warm, nurturing, and intellectually rich Montessori education, and the website describes an environment where children are supported, inspired, and deeply respected.

The school follows the Montessori teaching method, which it presents as a child-centred approach based on scientific observation of how children learn. The source notes that Montessori learning emphasises using all five senses rather than relying only on listening, watching, and reading. Montessori Life describes this approach as helping children build independence, curiosity, and confidence every day. English is the language listed for the school.

The school invites families to step into its classrooms, gardens, and learning spaces. The source also mentions a sensorial garden, created with joint funding from the school, parents, alumni, and friends of Montessori Life, which provides a beautiful outdoor learning space for the children. In addition, a memorial wall within the garden holds commemorative name plaques for attending and former pupils. The school’s materials also refer to an introduction video and show images of its spaces, but no further daily routines, clubs, or facilities are specified in the source.

What stands out most in the source is the school’s long relationship with its community and its consistent commitment to Montessori education. Montessori Life began in 2006 as “Montessori at the Sands” in Umhlanga and later relocated in 2008 to its current premises in Sunningdale, where it was renamed Montessori Life. The school says it has served the local community for more than 20 years and that several generations of children have learnt, grown, and flourished there. It may be a good fit for families looking for a Montessori pre-school in a homely setting, with a clear emphasis on independence, curiosity, and respect within a small early childhood environment.
