HK International Motomachi is an international preschool in Yokohama’s Motomachi area, Kanagawa, serving children from age 0 to 6. The school presents itself as an English international preschool aiming for an “American kindergarten” style and says it offers care and early childhood education in a genuine English-speaking environment. Its atmosphere is described as that of a large family, with children learning together across different ages rather than in strictly separate vertical groups.
The school’s approach is centered on English immersion, with all classroom care and play carried out in English only. The curriculum tags listed are English Immersion, Social Life, and Child Development, and the school emphasizes early exposure to English during the preschool years as a time when children can absorb language naturally. It also states that children learn not only English but also social life through the daily classroom setting. According to the school, Japanese can be learned from elementary school, while the early years are used to focus on English.
Daily life at HK International Motomachi is based in an English-only setting, and the school says even children who begin with no English can develop the ability to communicate in about half a year. The environment is described as safe and comfortable, with floor heating, a bright interior with large glass surfaces, and a detached building. The school also notes a 20-tsubo backyard, which it says is used safely for young children who want to move their bodies. It adds that the grounds are usually closed to outsiders and that there are three nearby parks, contributing to a well-situated environment.
What makes the school distinctive is its strong commitment to English-only early education and its mixed-age family-like setting. The school highlights a principal who graduated from Harvard University, and it invites families to visit and talk with staff. This may be a good fit for families looking for a preschool where English is the main language of daily life and where children are encouraged to build early communication skills in a small, protected environment. The school also says transfers from other preschools are welcome and handled confidentially.
