- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Practical Life
- Learning area: Care of Self
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Master a complex bilateral motor sequence
- Build independence in dressing
- Develop perseverance with challenging tasks
- Practice verbal self-instruction
Materials
- Shoe-lacing frame or real shoes
- Large practice shoe (oversized)
- Two-color laces (different color each half)
- Step-by-step visual cards
Instructions
1. Cross laces: right over left. 2. Tuck right lace under and pull tight. 3. Make a loop with right lace (bunny ear). 4. Wrap left lace around loop. 5. Push left lace through hole to make second loop. 6. Pull both loops tight. 7. Practice on frame, then real shoes.
Educator tip
Two-color laces make each lace visually distinct. The 'bunny ear' method works for most children. Some prefer two-loop method.
