Personal Weekly Budget
Upper-elementary children can own their money. The ledger is the control — a missing entry reveals itself. Indirect aim: financial literacy, delayed gratification, preparation for adult stewardship.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Practical Life
- Learning area: Practical Life — Elementary
- Level: Ages 9-11
Objectives
- Track weekly income (allowance) and spending
- Categorize expenses: save, give, spend
- Apply a 50/30/20 split
- Reflect on spending patterns
Materials
- Personal budget notebook
- Three jars or envelopes (save/give/spend)
- Receipts holder
- Weekly reflection chart
Instructions
1. Track allowance received. 2. Split 50% to save, 20% to give, 30% to spend (adjust as preferred). 3. Log each expense with date and category. 4. Weekly, total each column. 5. Transfer save to long-term goal. 6. Transfer give to chosen cause. 7. Reflect: did spending match values? 8. Adjust next week.
Educator tip
Children often over-spend; their own ledger teaches faster than any lecture.
Assessment
Observe tracking consistency, honest reflection, and habit formation.
