Cracking Eggs
Cracking eggs requires controlled force and precise hand movements—a challenging but satisfying cooking skill.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Practical Life
- Learning area: Food Preparation
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Learn controlled cracking technique
- Develop fine motor precision
- Practice for cooking activities
Materials
- Eggs
- Small bowl
- Larger bowl for cooking
- Paper towels for cleanup
Instructions
1. Hold egg in dominant hand. 2. Tap firmly against the edge of the small bowl. 3. Hold egg over the bowl. 4. Place thumbs in the crack. 5. Pull apart gently, letting the egg fall into the bowl. 6. Check for shell pieces—remove with a dampened finger. 7. Transfer to larger bowl if clean.
Educator tip
Have children crack into a small bowl first so shell pieces can be caught before adding to the recipe. One firm tap is better than multiple gentle ones.
Assessment
Child cracks an egg cleanly into a bowl with minimal shell pieces.
