Numeral Card Composition
The color-coded, superimposed numeral cards show how each digit represents a different place value and how they layer to form complete numbers.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Decimal System
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Understand place value through card layering
- Compose multi-digit numbers
- Read large numbers confidently
Materials
- Large numeral cards: 1-9 (green), 10-90 (blue), 100-900 (red), 1000-9000 (green)
- Work mat
Instructions
1. Present cards by category: units, tens, hundreds, thousands. 2. 'Find 3000.' Place down. 3. 'Find 400.' Layer on top. 4. 'Find 50.' Layer on. 5. 'Find 2.' Layer on top. 6. Read: '3,452.' 7. Peel apart to see each component.
Educator tip
The cards are different lengths so the layering works perfectly. Children see that 3452 = 3000 + 400 + 50 + 2.
