Learning Objectives
Children will engage in cooperative role-play, taking on different family roles.
Children will verbally express or demonstrate understanding of family responsibilities and relationships.
Children will develop social skills like sharing, turn-taking, and problem-solving within the context of imaginary family scenarios.
Children will use language to communicate ideas and feelings related to home and family life.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Introduce the "Family Role-Play Centre" by explaining that it's a special space where they can pretend to be part of a family, just like the families in the photos.
2. Show the children the dollhouse and dolls. Ask questions like, "Who lives in this house? What do you think they do at home?"
3. Invite children to choose dolls or dress-up clothes to become a character in their pretend family (e.g., a parent, a child, a grandparent).
4. Encourage children to enter the play space and begin their family activity. Observe their initial interactions.
5. Prompt them with questions if they seem unsure: "What is your family having for dinner?" "Who will help clean up?" "What story will you read before bed?"
6. Facilitate sharing of toys and space. Gently guide children if conflicts arise, asking them to use their words to solve problems, "How can we share the teddy bear that looks like a baby?"
7. Celebrate their imaginative play: "I love how you are taking care of the baby doll, just like grown-ups do at home!"
8. As children play, listen for how they describe family members and their jobs at home, reinforcing their understanding.
Educator Tip
To enrich the learning experience, encourage children to bring in a photograph of their own family to display near the centre. This helps to personalize the play and connect it to their real-life experiences. Ensure there are enough diverse dress-up options to represent various family structures. Always supervise for safety, ensuring play items are age-appropriate and used as intended.
Assessment
Observe children's interactions as they engage in role-play. Note instances where they collaboratively build a scenario, take turns in roles, and use language to express family relationships or activities. You might also collect photos of their play or jot down interesting dialogue or role assignments to document their understanding of family dynamics and social skills development.
Educator tip
Require complete thoughts; photograph play for portfolios.
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Anecdotal notes + observation of narrative play.
