Instructions
Transform the book corner into a role play library with a 'returns desk', book categorised on shelves (picture books, information books, story books), borrowing cards, and a stamp. Visit a real library first if possible to give children the experience.
Model visiting the library in role: 'I'm going to the library! I need to choose a book to borrow. Let me see... I think I'd like this one about dinosaurs.' Show the process of browsing, choosing, and borrowing.
Introduce the 'librarian' role and let children take turns. 'Ah, good morning! Would you like to borrow a book? Let me stamp your card.' Give genuine responsibility — children rise to it magnificently.
Model 'information seeking': 'I want to find out about spiders. Where should I look? Shall I ask the librarian? Excuse me — do you have any books about spiders?' This begins to develop the understanding that books contain information you can seek out.
Read returned books together: 'Oh, someone has brought back this book! Let me remind myself what happens in it...' This models the concept of multiple readings and community ownership of books.
Establish a real class lending library so children can genuinely take books home overnight. This makes the role play meaningful and builds the habit of books going between home and setting.
