Instructions

Materials

- Clear plastic zip-top bags with damp paper towels inside.

- Large dried lima beans or sunflower seeds.

- Clear packing tape.

- A low-level window or sliding glass door.

- A handheld mirror.

- A digital camera or tablet for documentation.

Learning Objectives

- Infants will track the movement of the teacher as they place seeds against the window.

- Infants will engage in sensory exploration by touching the texture of the seed packets.

- Infants will show curiosity by vocalizing or reaching toward the growing sprouts.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Place a damp paper towel inside a clear plastic bag and add two large seeds.

2. Seal the bag tightly to ensure no moisture escapes and the seeds remain secure.

3. Secure the bag to a window at the infant eye level using clear packing tape.

4. Gather infants on the floor near the window during morning circle time.

5. Point to the seeds and describe them using simple, repetitive language like see the seed or it is green.

6. Allow infants to touch the outside of the plastic bag to feel the texture of the damp towel and the firm seeds.

7. Use a mirror to reflect the light onto the seeds so infants can observe the visual contrast.

8. Check the bags daily and invite infants to look at the seeds during transitions.

9. Take photos of the infants observing the window to document their interest in the changing sprouts.

10. Replace the seeds if they become moldy or dry to maintain a clean environment.

Educator Tip

Infants learn through repetition and proximity. Keep the observation window clear of clutter so the seeds remain the focal point of the area. If an infant shows limited interest, bring the bag down to their level and gently guide their hand to touch the plastic while narrating the experience.

Assessment

- Observe if the infant turns their head or eyes toward the window when the teacher points to the seeds.

- Note if the infant reaches out to touch or pat the plastic bag during sensory time.

- Record any vocalizations or gestures the infant makes when observing the sprouts over several days.

Educator tip

Guided questioning to encourage language, reasoning, and participation. Differentiate for ability levels; incorporate sensory supports; ensure safety.

Assessment

Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Observation checklist or rubric aligned to developmental stage.
