Farms Around the World Mapping
Supports agricultural awareness, STEM integration, literacy, and social-emotional development at the IPC Level 3 stage.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS At the Farm
- Learning area: Geography
- Level: EYFS Reception
Objectives
- Developmentally appropriate objectives aligned to IPC Level 3 for Farms Around the World Mapping.
Materials
- Level-appropriate farm-themed materials and manipulatives.
Instructions
Materials
- Large world map or globe
- Printed photographs of diverse farm types (e.g., rice paddies in Asia, cattle ranches in the Americas, olive groves in Europe)
- Small farm animal figurines
- Adhesive labels or sticky notes
- Glue sticks and child-safe scissors
- Large piece of butcher paper for a collaborative classroom map
Learning Objectives
- Identify that different regions of the world grow different types of food.
- Demonstrate an understanding of map orientation by placing items in specific locations.
- Practise fine motor skills through cutting, labelling, and placing items on the map.
- Engage in collaborative discussion about global agricultural diversity.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather students in a circle and display the world map. Ask if they think all farms look the same.
2. Show the printed photographs one by one. Discuss the climate and landscape of each farm.
3. Explain that farmers grow different crops based on the weather and the land in their part of the world.
4. Lay the large butcher paper on the floor and sketch a simplified outline of the continents.
5. Assign small groups to specific regions and provide them with the corresponding farm photos.
6. Instruct students to cut out their photos and glue them onto the correct continent on the butcher paper.
7. Have students choose a farm animal figurine and place it on the map near their farm photo.
8. Assist students in writing the name of the continent or the crop on a sticky note to label their work.
9. Walk around the map as a group, allowing each student to explain why they placed their farm in that location.
10. Display the completed map in the classroom at eye level for ongoing reference.
Educator Tip
To differentiate for advanced learners, ask them to research one specific animal or crop and present a fun fact to the class during the mapping process. If a student struggles with placement, provide a colour-coded key that matches the farm photos to the continent outlines.
Assessment
- Observe if the student can correctly match a farm type to its corresponding geographic region.
- Note the student ability to articulate why a specific farm belongs in a certain climate.
- Record the student participation level during the collaborative mapping process.
Educator tip
Guided questioning to encourage language, reasoning, and participation. Differentiate for ability levels; incorporate sensory supports; ensure safety.
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observation checklist or rubric aligned to developmental stage.
