Simple Machines: Levers and Ramps
Simple machines are children's first experience with physics. Levers and ramps are intuitive—children have used them on playgrounds.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Cultural Studies
- Learning area: Science
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Understand how levers and ramps reduce effort
- Explore cause and effect in physics
- Develop scientific thinking
- Build problem-solving skills
Materials
- Wooden planks for ramps
- Fulcrum blocks
- Small weights or toy cars
- Measuring tools
- Recording sheet
Instructions
1. Present challenge: move heavy object to high surface. 2. Try lifting directly. 3. Introduce ramp. 4. Compare effort. 5. Experiment with lever: where to place fulcrum? 6. Try different positions. 7. Record which works best.
Educator tip
Connect to real life: 'A seesaw is a lever! A slide is a ramp!' Let children discover principles before naming them.
