Magnetic and Non-Magnetic
Exploring magnetism develops scientific thinking: prediction, testing, and classification based on evidence.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Cultural Studies
- Learning area: Science
- Level: Ages 3-5
Objectives
- Classify materials by magnetic properties
- Develop prediction skills
- Build scientific vocabulary
Materials
- Strong magnets
- Collection of objects (metal and non-metal)
- Sorting trays
- Recording sheet
Instructions
1. Present magnet and explain safety. 2. Predict: 'Will the magnet stick to this?' 3. Test each object. 4. Sort into magnetic and non-magnetic. 5. Discuss patterns (iron and steel are magnetic).
Educator tip
Include different metals—aluminum is not magnetic; steel is. This challenges assumptions.
Assessment
Child predicts, tests, and classifies objects by magnetic properties.
