Fundamental Needs of Humans — Cosmic Framework

Every human culture meets the same needs. The Fundamental Needs framework is Montessori's cosmic anthropology: underneath variety, unity. The chart is the control — a culture study is incomplete without all nine needs addressed. Indirect aim: anthropology, comparative culture study, ethical universalism.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Present the chart: five material needs, four spiritual needs. 2. For each need, show how one's own culture meets it. 3. Choose a second culture (ancient Egypt, medieval Japan, Inuit, Maasai). 4. Research how that culture meets each of the nine needs. 5. Create a comparison chart. 6. Present to the class. 7. Discuss: what is universal? what is cultural? 8. File the research in the cosmic album.

Educator tip

This framework underlies most elementary history and geography. Introduce it early; return to it all year. Every civilization study uses it.

Assessment

Observe accurate identification of the nine needs, sensitive research into another culture, and growth in comparative reasoning.
